The vase of classic baluster shape hand painted with floral and decorative panels repeated around the body and with a tapestry style patterned cover.

Painted in tones of blue, red and green on a white ground with gilded highlights. decorated in underglaze-blue, iron-red and gilding with red flowers and blue branches in cartouches filled with flowering plants. The domed cover with finial decorated en suite.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced around Arita in Hizen province, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gold enamels. Originating in the seventeenth century, these wares became highly sought after across Europe for decorative display.

Imari wares are crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to form a dense porcelain body. The cobalt blue decoration is painted under the glaze prior to the initial firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours and gilding applied over the glaze for subsequent firings.
