Rare Large 19th century Antique Slipware Seaton Pottery Pancheon Bowl _ Dated

A fabulous large scale Scottish rare slipware antique deep pancheon bowl from the Seaton Pottery. This decorative piece of antique slipware is dated Dec 12th 1885 with the name Margaret Wood of Portlethen. A rare survivor with no cracks, some loss to the coloured inner glaze. Beautifully hand decorated with heart motifs, geometric patterns and a central hexafoil, a symbol used to ward off evil and to protect the household. This is a very rare piece and being such a substantial large size. A rare Scottish example of Seaton Pottery slipware.

Slipware is a style of pottery where liquid clay, known as slip, is applied to the earthenware surface for decorative effect before firing. This traditional technique was widely used across Britain and Europe from the 17th to 19th centuries to create everyday household items as well as commemorative presentation pieces.

Traditional 19th-century slipware was crafted using locally sourced red earthenware clay. The vessel was decorated with contrasting pale or coloured clay slips through techniques such as slip-trailing or sgraffito, and then sealed with a clear lead-based glaze before kiln firing.
