Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pocket telescope, often referred to as a spyglass or draw telescope, is a portable optical instrument designed with concentric sliding tubes that collapse for transport. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these compact instruments were widely utilised by naval officers, travellers, and naturalists for magnification in the field.

These telescopes were predominantly engineered from brass for corrosion resistance against maritime environments, featuring hand-ground glass lenses fitted within inner draw tubes. The outermost barrel was frequently encased in leather, wood, or shagreen to provide insulation and an enhanced grip during operation.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit age-appropriate patination on the brass surfaces, hand-cut screw threads, and minor imperfections within the hand-ground optics. Stamped maker marks or inscriptions near the eyepiece tube or objective barrel also serve as key markers of provenance and historical era.

A collapsible brass telescope serves as a tactile accent when displayed alongside books, globes, or framed botanical prints on a study desk or bookshelf. Staging the object partially extended highlights its mechanical construction while introducing a sophisticated, curated atmosphere to a room.

Optics should be dusted gently using a soft camel-hair brush or optical cleaning cloth without abrasive solvents to prevent scratching the glass. The brass body should remain unpolished to preserve its historical patina, while leather components require occasional light conditioning with neutral wax paste to prevent cracking.
