Cotswold Oriental Rugs has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Antique Yomut Turkmen tribal ceremonial horse cover & saddle rug.
Circa 1890.
The cover in finely knotted with dense velvet like pile, giving the item the strength required for use. The banded design in shades of madder red, indigo blue and ivory is typical of this group of weavings. It is rare to find a surviving set of both blanket and saddle rug, this is the only surviving pair that I have seen.

The cover and saddle rug are in original condition with very slight wear and almost full pile, the dye quality is superb and gives the rich colours required for use on special occasions such as a tribal wedding.

A superb collectible display item. A closely related example is published in 'Turkoman Tribal Rugs' by Werner Loges, plate 51, page 93. And another example is published in 'Turkoman Carpets' by Siawosch Azadi, item 41.
