Victorian Landscape Oil Painting

19th century
Description

An interesting and decorative oil on canvas landscape painting. The work depicts a typically Romantic landscape with a background of forested hills, a valley with a small village, a bridge with figures crossing the river. The work is very much in the manner of the Romantic school of the mid-nineteenth century, it is signed by monogram AH and dated 1855, it is also titled. The monogram is unidentified and the title is somewhat illegible, sadly. The painting is in good condition with the odd minor mark and typical craquelure. The gilt frame is the original and very good quality. The whole has a great period look and is ready to hang.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape paintings typically feature natural scenes, rural life, and atmospheric topography, reflecting nineteenth-century interest in the natural world and romanticised countryside vistas.

Artists during the Victorian period primarily used oil paint applied to woven linen canvas or timber panels, housed within moulded gesso and softwood frames finished in gold leaf.

Authentic oil paintings of this period exhibit uniform surface craquelure, natural wood oxidisation on the canvas stretcher frame, and hand-moulded gesso details along the outer frame moulding.

A Victorian landscape painting can be positioned above a mantelpiece or console table to serve as a focal point, or integrated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary works for visual contrast.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and fluctuating heat sources, dusting the carved frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
