Georgian Mahogany Candle / Salt Box

18th century
Description

A lovely antique mahogany salt or candle box dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has a hinged lift up lid with a small fixing hole on the shaped upstand to allow for it to be hung on a wall. It has the most lovely colour and patina and is the only example I've seen with a curved lid.

It is in good original condition and displays well. There are signs of age and use, a few small marks and knocks and some small chips but nothing detrimental. It has had some batons put across the back to reinforce some splits and it is strong and sturdy. It has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Georgian period, wooden salt boxes were mounted near hearths or chimneys to keep salt or tallow candles dry. Salt was an expensive commodity, and placement near heat sources prevented moisture accumulation and clumping.

Georgian examples were typically crafted from woods such as mahogany, oak, or pine, utilizing hand-cut dovetail or mortise joints. They feature shaped backboards with pierced apertures for hanging, alongside small iron or brass hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-tooling, original surface patination, and wear patterns consistent with wall mounting. The interior may show historical staining from salt contact, while hardware typically displays hand-hammered characteristics.

These wall-mounted containers are suitable for display in kitchen alcoves, entryways, or living spaces. They function as storage for small contemporary items or as standalone decorative period features.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the original wood finish. Avoid exposure to high humidity, moisture, or direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
