Hand‑carved Japanese Bear Sculpture

Description

A finely carved Japanese wooden bear, worked from a single block of timber and showing the bold, textural carving associated with Hokkaidō Ainu folk sculpture. The bear is caught mid‑stride with an open mouth, its teeth and tongue crisply defined, and the fur rendered through expressive chisel work that gives the figure movement. The natural grain catches the light beautifully across the ridged surface.

The underside retains honest hand‑cut tool marks, confirming its traditional, fully hand‑made origin. The paws have a charming naïveté, and the whole piece balances strength, warmth, and rustic artistry — the qualities collectors prize in early Japanese bear carvings.
