Bokhara Suzani with Architectural Design, Uzbekistan, Circa 1850, 1.23m X 0.92m

Description

Dating to around 1850, this cute Bokhara Suzani is in a very unusual format, namely, the Nim-Suzani size with the architectural arch or prayer design. The silk embroidery is finely worked in different stitches. Note how the flowers rotate at different angles, which gives the design a sense of movement, Also, note the single flower at the top of the niche. The guard stripes are also elegantly drawn. The colours are light and crisp with lovely shades of magenta, terracotta, green, yellow and light blue, and a lovely aubergine which has been used sparingly in places. Clean and in very good condition. This is an absolutely charming suzani which would make a lovely wall hanging or bed cover.

A suzani is a decorative hand-embroidered textile created across Central Asia, particularly in Uzbekistan, traditionally crafted by brides and their families as part of a marriage dowry. Nineteenth-century Bokhara suzanis are recognised by their intricate floral carnation and pomegranate motifs, architectural mihrab arch structures, and silk thread execution on hand-loomed cotton grounds.

Traditional suzanis are constructed from narrow strips of hand-spun cotton or linen fabric that are joined together after embroidery. The decorative patterns are executed using vegetable-dyed silk yarns with specialized hand stitches, primarily chain stitch (ilmok), tambour stitch, and couched stitch (basma).

Authentic 19th-century suzanis feature panelled construction with slight misalignment across the join seams, soft dye variations (abrash) from natural dye baths, and remaining traces of hand-drawn black or blue ink guidelines on the foundation fabric. Modern reproductions tend to use single-piece synthetic ground cloths and uniform chemical dyes.

An antique suzani can be mounted on a custom fabric-wrapped frame or suspended via a concealed curtain rod to serve as a focal textile wall hanging. Smaller panels can also be draped across the foot of a bed, used over a sofa back, or framed behind protective museum glass above a sideboard.

Antique silk needlework must be kept out of direct sunlight and isolated from high humidity to prevent fiber degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should only be performed by a professional textile conservator using low-suction micro-attachments through a protective mesh screen.
