Antique George III Brass-bound Mahogany Octagonal Cellaret C.1790

18th century
Description

A Georgian brass-bound mahogany cellaret of octagonal form, the hinged lid with a central figured panel framed by a crossbanded border, opening to an original lead-lined interior with radial bottle slots, flanked by heavy brass carry handles and set on a matching lower cupboard with a single door enclosing a two-tier interior.

The lift-off chest construction, designed to allow servants to carry the ice-laden cellaret independently of the base, is a hallmark of high-grade 18th-century entertaining furniture. Its compact octagonal footprint and substantial vertical presence make it an exceptional anchor piece for a dining room alcove or positioned beside a library armchair where its crossbanded top can also function as an elevated drinks table.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear and a mellowed patination consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellaret is a specialized wooden chest or cabinet designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store and chill wine or spirit bottles, often featuring internal lead lining and secure locks.

Georgian cellarets were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, reinforced with brass binding bands for structural support and fitted with brass carry handles and lock plates.

Authentic George III cellarets feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-hammered brass banding, original iron or brass lock mechanisms, and period-appropriate wear along the interior and base.

A cellaret functions as a compact side table or accent piece in modern living rooms, dining spaces, or studies, serving as a functional bar unit or standalone sculptural storage piece.

Preserve the mahogany by applying a beeswax polish annually and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources. Brass fittings should be dusted lightly without abrasive cleaners to maintain original patination.
