French Bird’s Eye Maple Faux Bamboo Mirrored Armoire, Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Tinker & Toad
Description

This striking French armoire forms part of a beautiful bedroom suite that I sourced on a recent buying trip to Paris. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, it reflects the period's fascination with Japonisme, combining elegant proportions with exceptional craftsmanship.

The oak carcass is faced throughout with beautifully figured bird's-eye (burr) maple and enriched with meticulously executed faux-bamboo rails, corner posts and pediment finials. The full-length mirrored door not only enhances its elegant appearance but also brings excellent light and a greater sense of space to a room. Inside are two adjustable shelves (supplied), an internal drawer and a generous locking base drawer, providing practical storage.

The original lock and key are present. The warm honey-blonde tones, crisp detailing and well-balanced proportions make this a versatile statement piece, equally at home in a bedroom, dressing room or even a hallway. Designed to come apart for transport and straightforward installation, it is as practical as it is handsome.

Better still, this armoire was accompanied by the matching French meuble de toilette (dressing chest) and a pair of matching 4ft bedsteads, available separately, making this a rare opportunity to acquire an increasingly scarce and remarkably complete bedroom suite. Dimensions: H 232.5 cm × W 110 cm × D 47 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Faux bamboo furniture originated in 19th-century France during the height of the Japonisme movement. Craftsmen turned hard woods such as pine, beech, or maple to simulate the distinct nodes and texture of natural bamboo stems, frequently finishing them in light stains to imitate natural cane.

These armoires typically feature solid wood frames carved to resemble bamboo, paired with birds eye maple timber or veneers known for their distinctive grain patterns. Original pieces incorporate silvered mirrored glass, hand-dovetailed drawers, and brass or steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved or hand-turned bamboo nodes with subtle variations in spacing, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, and historical wear or light foxing on the original mirrored glass backing.

A faux bamboo armoire functions as a focal storage piece in a master bedroom, dressing room, or large hallway. The mirrored front visually expands smaller spaces, while the light wood tone coordinates with modern botanical, eclectic, or classic interior schemes.

Maintain wood surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually. Keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and clean the mirrored glass using a non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than the glass frame.
