Antique William IV Rosewood Reading Stand & Occasional Table C.1830

19th century
Description

A William IV rosewood reading and music stand, also functioning beautifully as a handsome occasional table. The richly figured rectangular top features a detachable book rest, with the angle easily adjusted via the original brass quadrant mechanism, set on a telescopic, height adjustable iron stem with a brass locking collar, all above a turned baluster column raised on a swept tripod base terminating in scroll feet and pendant drop finial.

The piece transitions smoothly and effortlessly from an angled music stand or reading lectern to a flat occasional table. Ingenious dual-purpose furniture enjoyed immense popularity during the late Regency and William IV periods, prized by wealthy patrons for its mechanical novelty, versatility and functional elegance.

Very good antique condition, displaying a deep natural patina and minor entirely stable edge-moulding movement consistent with age. Structurally all solid, mechanically sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1830.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, these pieces transition between Regency lines and early Victorian substantiality. Reading stands from this era feature rich hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, turned stems, and adjustable tops designed to support books or sheet music.

Cabinetmakers typically utilised high-grade rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, selected for their pronounced grain figures. The adjustment mechanisms relied on brass ratchets, thumbscrews, or threaded collars, paired with solid timber columns and tripod bases.

Authentic period examples display characteristic motifs such as gadrooning, lotus carving, turned pedestals, and scroll feet. They feature period-appropriate brass fittings with original threads rather than modern machine-cut screws.

An antique reading stand serves as a focal display for an open art volume, atlas, or manuscript in a study or living area. It can also function as a music rest beside a piano or as a compact occasional table beside an armchair.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax paste sparingly to protect the finish. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, fading, or veneer movement.
