Antique Victorian Ebonised and Inlaid Six-piece Bedroom Suite C.1880

19th century
Description

An exceptional late-19th-century Victorian bedroom suite, comprising six coordinated pieces and displaying an extraordinarily complete decorative scheme throughout.

The suite includes a monumental canopy bed, triple wardrobe, marble-topped washstand, mirrored dressing table, bedside pot cupboard and freestanding towel rail. Each piece is constructed in richly toned ebonised wood and decorated with fine contrasting inlay, geometric linework, classical urn motifs, delicate floral ornament and architectural spindle galleries.

The imposing wardrobe is centred by a full-length mirrored door and flanked by two inlaid cupboard sections, providing generous storage while retaining remarkable visual balance. The dressing table offers extensive drawer space beneath a tall central mirror, complemented by elevated side drawers and smaller mirror plates.

Particularly striking is the marble-topped washstand, fitted with three drawers, twin cupboards and a decorative tiled gallery featuring colourful botanical designs. The towering bed creates the greatest impact, with an architectural canopy, pleated peach-coloured drapery, upholstered headboard and richly inlaid footboard.

Complete Victorian bedroom suites of this scale are increasingly difficult to source. Their decorative unity, practical function and rarity make them highly desirable for collectors, period properties, boutique hotels and distinctive interior projects. Offered together, the suite represents a genuine opportunity to acquire an entire historic room setting rather than a collection of unrelated pieces.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian ebonised furniture became popular in the late 19th century, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and East Asian design accents. These pieces feature timber stained black to resemble ebony, often embellished with bone, ivory, or contrasting wood inlays depicting classical urns and geometric motifs.

Suites from this era were constructed using hardwoods like ash or walnut, finished with a dark ebonised lacquer. Complementary materials included original mirror plate glass, white marble tops, decorative ceramic splashback tiles, and metal castors.

Authentic period items showcase hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware, and natural wear to the dark ebonised surface. Inspecting drawer linings and back panels reveals characteristic Victorian construction techniques and period timber conversion marks.

The dark silhouette of ebonised furniture creates contrast against neutral walls and soft linen bedding. Combining structured late 19th-century furniture with modern lighting and simple architectural details creates a balanced interior arrangement.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to protect the dark finish and delicate inlays. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excessive moisture, especially near marble and tile surfaces, and maintain consistent indoor humidity.
