Antique Victorian Oak Birmingham Jeweller's Stool C.1860

19th century
Description

A wonderfully original Victorian oak jeweller’s stool, the thick single-piece rough-sawn slab seat with exposed wedged through-tenons, raised on three hand-faceted splayed legs.

Bearing the hand-carved artisan mark 'PALLETT' to the seat, the piece carries strong provenance directly from the 19th-century workshops of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Its heavy surface scarring, historic marking and deep patination lend it immense physical character, turning a simple tripod utility into a compelling survival of British industrial heritage.

Very good antique condition, displaying a deep authentic workshop patina, honest surface marks and natural timber shrinkage. Structurally solid, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Crafted during the nineteenth century, these utilitarian stools were engineered for workshop artisans, featuring compact dimensions, thick timber seats, and splayed legs designed to withstand daily trade use.

English hardwoods such as oak, elm, and beech were predominantly utilised due to their density, durability, and resistance to wear in active workshop environments.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, wedged leg tenons visible on the seat surface, uneven patination from long-term wear, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A compact oak stool functions effectively as an occasional side table beside an armchair, a decorative plinth for ceramics on a fireplace hearth, or an accent piece in a hallway.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
