Antique Victorian Mahogany Card Table by James Shoolbred & Co. C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century mahogany card table by James Shoolbred & Co. in the Chippendale Revival style. The beautifully figured top folds open to a forest-green baize playing surface with dished corner counter wells, all supported on an impressive pull-out, telescopic sliding frame.

Below, the frieze is decorated on all sides with blind fretwork and a central floral relief panel to the front and rear, all raised on acanthus-carved cabriole legs with hand-carved ball-and-claw feet.

Produced by James Shoolbred & Co., the table transitions seamlessly from a freestanding or wall-facing console into a substantial playing surface. Its rear sliding-frame mechanism provides exceptional structural stability when opened, ensuring a rigid, four-cornered foundation for gaming and entertaining.

Very good antique condition, with a deep aged colour and light surface wear consistent with age. One rear foot features a historic loss with stability unaffected. The sliding frame operates smoothly. Structurally sound and ready for immediate placement.

English, circa 1890.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian card tables were specialized occasional furniture pieces crafted for social gaming, often incorporating folding surfaces lined with baize and referencing earlier Georgian or Chippendale design motifs.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring dense wool baize playing surfaces, brass hinges, and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, hand-carved ornamentation, original woven baize lining, and occasionally stamped maker marks from prominent cabinetmakers like James Shoolbred & Co.

A Victorian card table can function as a distinguished occasional side table, a compact hall surface, or an active gaming station within a study or library setting.

Maintain the mahogany wood by applying natural beeswax along the grain, and keep the wool baize clean using a soft-bristled brush to remove dust without disturbing the textile weave.
