Large George III Bowfront Mahogany Wardrobe C.1800 in the Manner of Gillows

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome George III bowfront mahogany wardrobe with beautifully figured oval panels and substantial proportions, dating from around 1800 and made in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.

The wardrobe features a finely detailed dentil-moulded cornice above a pair of ebony-strung panelled doors with striking oval figured mahogany panels. The doors open to reveal a generous hanging interior fitted with a later brass hanging rail, while the base incorporates two deep drawers providing useful additional storage.

The elegant bowfront form, quality mahogany veneers and understated ebony stringing give the piece a refined architectural presence, making it equally suitable for a period home or a more contemporary interior.

A substantial and practical Georgian wardrobe offering excellent storage with classic early nineteenth-century design.

DIMENSIONS

CONDITION

This wardrobe presents well and remains structurally sound, with the honest wear expected of a Georgian piece over 200 years old. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 18th-century Britain, George III bowfront wardrobes feature a curved front profile designed to maximise interior depth while displaying flame mahogany veneers and balanced classical proportions inspired by cabinetmakers like Gillows.

Georgian wardrobes were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, often incorporating pine or oak as secondary drawer linings and internal carcass frames.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass escutcheons or oval drop handles, hand-sawn backboards, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with historic construction.

A classic mahogany wardrobe functions as a focal architectural piece in master bedrooms, dressing rooms, or wide entry halls, contrasting warmth against contemporary neutral backdrops and textured linens.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality clear beeswax twice yearly, keeping the timber shielded from direct sunlight and severe central heating fluctuations.
