Lee Hawkins Antiques & Interiors has dated this French Kingwood Writing Table to the Victorian era.
Beneath, the frieze is ornamented with further parquetry panels and opens as a generously proportioned full-width drawer, providing useful storage while preserving the table’s elegant architectural form.
The central drawer front is enriched with an impressive gilt-bronze plaque depicting playful classical putti, complemented by beaded ormolu borders, floral corner mounts and further gilt-bronze detailing to the legs. The table is raised on four slender, tapering and fluted supports, each inset with decorative mounts and terminating in gilt-bronze sabots.
Its refined proportions and comparatively compact size make it highly versatile. It would function beautifully as a writing desk, dressing table, console table or decorative centre table within a study, bedroom, drawing room or reception space.
The combination of kingwood, finely arranged parquetry and extensive ormolu decoration reflects the sophisticated cabinetmaking associated with French Belle Époque furniture. Well-preserved examples of this quality remain desirable to collectors and interior designers, offering both practical use and enduring decorative value.
