Antique Late Victorian Cast Iron Stick Stand by Coalbrookdale C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century cast iron stick stand by Coalbrookdale, the arched Neoclassical cresting centred by an anthemion motif flanked by foliate decoration and central embossed foundry mark, set over a divided upper retaining rail, above an openwork lattice back panel ornamented with floral rosettes within pointed foliate mounts, on a plinth base housing the original lift-out cast iron drip tray.

Later painted, bearing both the raised foundry stamp and an 1885 registration number cast into the lower side scrolls, the stand retains its correct removable drip tray. The slim rectangular footprint sits flush against hallway or vestibule walls.

Very good antique condition, with attractive wear to the painted surfaces and a small historic loss to one drip tray handle. Structurally sound and ready for placement.

English, circa 1885.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian cast iron stick stands were introduced during the nineteenth century to accommodate wet umbrellas and walking canes in domestic entryways. Foundries such as Coalbrookdale mass-produced these functional items, combining architectural motifs with practical, heavy-gauge iron construction.

These stands were manufactured using molten pig iron poured into sand moulds, creating dense and detailed castings. They typically feature an upper retaining rail, open lattice or scroll back panels, and an integrated or removable cast iron drip tray at the base.

Authentic pieces frequently display a stamped makers mark reading COALBROOKDALE, alongside a Victorian diamond registration stamp or cast pattern number on the reverse or underside. Crisp casting detail and significant structural weight are also hallmarks of genuine production.

Position the stand in an entryway, foyer, or porch alongside neutral coat hooks or modern timber panelling. The architectural texture of painted cast iron offers visual contrast against contemporary floor tiles or scrubbed floorboards.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. If moisture collects in the drip tray, wipe it clean to prevent standing water from eroding the paint layer or causing underlying oxidisation.
