Victorian Sheraton Revival Hand Painted Serpentine Side Cabinet / Bedside Cupboard

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive Victorian Sheraton Revival serpentine cabinet dating from the late 19th century, finished in simulated rosewood with charming hand-painted landscape panels to the doors and drawer. Elegant proportions and compact size make it ideal as a bedside cupboard, lamp cabinet, side cabinet or occasional piece.

The cabinet features a serpentine front with a shaped frieze drawer above a pair of cupboard doors enclosing a useful shelved interior. It stands on elegant square tapering legs and retains its original decorative character, with the hand-painted scenes providing a particularly appealing feature.

A versatile decorative cabinet that works equally well in a bedroom, sitting room or hallway.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 84 cm

Width: 67 cm

Depth: 34 cm

CONDITION

A decorative antique cabinet with the expected signs of age and use. The painted finish displays light marks, knocks and scratches, mainly to the top surface, together with a couple of light ring marks.

There are historic splits around the hinges of the hinged top which appear to have been securely glued and remain stable in use. The top opens and closes correctly with careful handling. The lock to the hinged top has no key but is currently unlocked.

The cupboard retains a working lock with key. There is a small loss to the beading at the lower right-hand door together with some attractive age-related craquelure to the painted decoration. Overall, it presents well with an appealing patina and is a practical, decorative piece of Victorian furniture.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Sheraton Revival furniture drew inspiration from Thomas Sheratons late eighteenth-century Neoclassical designs, featuring slender proportions, straight tapered legs, serpentine fronts, and refined decorative embellishments such as hand-painted vignettes.

Craftspeople typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, structured with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail joints, and detailed decorative finishes applied by skilled ornamental painters.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age-appropriate wear to the painted surface, hand-cut joinery, solid timber back panels, original brass hardware or key escutcheons, and natural patination within the varnish.

Such cabinets serve as elegant focal points in modern bedrooms or hallways, pairing exceptionally well with minimalist lighting, contemporary artwork, or textured organic linens to balance the elaborate historical detailing.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, and avoid silicone polishes or abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip the original painted artwork.
