Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique milliners hat stretcher is a mechanical trade tool historically used by hatters to alter the proportions of felt or straw headwear. It consists of a split wooden block expanded via a central threaded screw mechanism.

These tools were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods, such as beech or oak, to withstand continuous pressure. The internal expanding mechanisms and crank handles were forged from cast iron or steel.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut metal threading, naturally worn split seams from repeated expansion, and smooth timber patination. Many original models also bear impressed sizing numbers or foundry stamps along the base.

In contemporary interiors, these objects are styled as sculptural curiosities on office desks, bookshelves, or sideboards. They also function practically as distinct display stands for headwear or wigs.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and applying clear beeswax periodically. The cast iron screw mechanism requires occasional light lubrication with mineral oil to prevent oxidation and ensure movement.
