Pair Georgian Marquetry Inlaid Corner/ Lamp Tables with Brass Galleries

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An elegant and unusual pair of 18th century marquetry inlaid corner tables, richly decorated with finely executed floral marquetry incorporating classical urns, scrolling foliage and exotic birds.

Each table retains its pierced brass gallery above a matching pierced frieze and stands on three elegant tapering legs. Unlike many examples, the decoration continues around all exposed sides, allowing them to be displayed either against a wall or free-standing within a room.

The warm honey-coloured timber and intricate marquetry combine to create a particularly decorative pair, equally suited to use as occasional tables, lamp tables or hall furniture.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 76.5cm

Width: 54cm

Depth: 38cm

CONDITION

These tables display the honest wear expected from furniture approaching 250 years old. There are age-related marks, knocks and surface scratches together with some minor losses to the marquetry. The pierced brass galleries have small breaks, minor losses and areas where they have lifted slightly from the timber supports.

One of the square floral paterae to the top has been replaced with a plain timber section, and part of one carved sunflower ornament is missing. Despite these historic imperfections, both tables remain structurally sound with attractive colour and patina.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marquetry corner tables from the 18th century feature intricate wood veneer patterns, often showcasing floral or foliate motifs, specifically constructed with a ninety-degree back to fit into room corners.

Craftsmen typically used hardwoods such as walnut, satinwood, and mahogany for the framework, combined with contrasting fruitwood inlays for the marquetry designs and pierced brass for protective top galleries.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut marquetry veneers with slight variations, traditional pegged or hand-cut joinery, a developed patina, and natural wood shrinkage along grain lines.

Place these corner tables in unutilised room nooks or beside seating, pairing the warm wood tones with modern ambient lighting or glass decorative objects to complement traditional craftsmanship.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, and placing the tables away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent veneer movement.
