Meissen Porcelain Group, the Broken Eggs, Marcolini Period, C. 1775.

18th century
Description

A fine Marcolini Meissen porcelain group, ‘The Broken Eggs’, c. 1775. Modelled by Michel Victor Acier, as two ladies accompanied by putti, with an upturned basket of broken eggs at their feet. Set upon a circular base, moulded with a continuous freeze of arches and rosettes, after a design by Johann Carl Schonheit.

The details finely moulded, with careful attention to the enamelled decoration.

Underglaze blue crossed swords mark and star to the underside.

Height – 25 cm, 9 7/8”.

Width – 16 cm, 6 1/4”.

Depth – 12.5 cm, 4 7/6”.

Condition – Some minor chips to the leaves, firing cracks to the base. Otherwise in fine condition.

Whilst this figure is relatively easy to find in its later 19th Century incarnation, it is very rare to find an example created in the lifetime of Acier.

It is clear to see the difference in the modelling of the two periods. This example is particularly well modelled, as is evident in the realistic rendering of the ladies faces, and veins on their hands, as opposed to the romanticised style of the 19th Century examples, to appeal to a Victorian audience.

The Marcolini period, spanning 1774 to 1814, refers to the era when Count Camillo Marcolini directed the Meissen manufactory in Saxony. This era was characterised by a transition from Rococo exuberance towards Neoclassical restraint, marked by a distinctive star below the crossed swords factory mark.

18th-century Meissen figures were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, composed primarily of kaolin and feldspar. The figures were assembled from individually moulded components, high-fired, and finished with overglaze enamel paints and leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces feature the blue underglaze crossed swords mark, often accompanied by a star for the Marcolini period, along with impressed model numbers. Features include fine hand-painted enamel details, precise sculpting of facial features, and minor wear on unglazed base rims.

A porcelain figure group can be positioned on a dark timber sideboard, within a glass display cabinet, or centred on a mantelpiece to create a focal point. The intricate polychrome palette contrasts cleanly against muted or modern minimalist backdrops.

Dust delicate porcelain figures regularly using a soft makeup brush or microfibre duster. Avoid immersion in water, harsh chemical detergents, or abrasive materials that could erode overglaze enamels and gilded surfaces.
