Antique Late Victorian Elm & Beech Captain's Desk Chair C.1880

19th century
Description

A late Victorian captain's desk chair, the beech bow-back incorporating a solid raised backrest, shaped arm-rests and turned spindles, set over a beautifully figured and contoured single-piece elm seat, all raised on a beech frame of turned legs united by a H-stretcher.

Designed for practical comfort during long periods of work, its broad stance and standard seat height make it an ideal working chair for a period library, study or home office, while its lighter, golden-chestnut tone allows it to sit easily within varied interior schemes.

Very good antique condition, showing some surface wear and a characterful asymmetry to the leg rake. Structurally sound, stable and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1880.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A captains desk chair, also known as a smokers bow chair, is a low-backed wooden armchair originating in the 19th century, featuring a horse-shoe shaped crest rail and turned spindle supports.

These chairs were commonly constructed using native hardwoods, with solid elm selected for contoured seats due to its splitting resistance, alongside turned beech or ash for legs and spindles.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned spindle construction, deep saddle-cut seats, wedge-tenon joinery, and evidence of genuine surface wear and timber patination.

An antique wooden desk chair functions effectively as a focal seat in a contemporary study or home office, offering contrast against modern joinery and neutral palettes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the finish and prevent the wood from drying.
