For Sale by Artisan Antiques
Description

We are delighted to offer this stunning French vermeil/silvergilt mounted crystal glass box, made in the 19th century.

The box features a wonderful regal design with elegance and opulence combined. Fittingly, the top lid has an engraved coronet of a Duke/Duchess, most likely as part of a large service amongst other wares of a noble family.

The base features a lovely fluted/wrythen decoration presenting a mystical and lustrous aesthetic.

The silver gilt mount is typical of French embellishment of the period with an intricate engine-turned and dotted border combined with a floral and foliate band on top.

Overall, a wonderful piece of 19th-century French antiqueware, ideal for box collections or a single impressive accent piece for the discerning box lover. Furthermore, it may also be used for practical storage of snuff, mints, medication, small jewels etc.

The silver gilt mount is marked with the French boar's head hallmark for silver.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These boxes were luxury personal items created in France during the 1800s to hold jewellery, powders, or small personal items on a dressing table. They frequently featured hand-cut lead crystal and precious metal mounts, such as silver gilt, to reflect light and display refined craftsmanship.

These items were crafted using high-lead content cut glass or heavy crystal paired with sterling silver or brass mounts that had been electroplated or mercury-gilded with gold (vermeil). Engraved lids often used wheel-cutting techniques to etch crests, monograms, or coats of arms directly into the crystal surface.

Authentic nineteenth-century French pieces typically bear small French silver hallmarks, such as the Minerva head, struck into the metal collar or rim. The glass exhibits hand-cut irregularities, sharp faceting, and notable weight, while the engraving shows precise depth characteristic of hand-wheel carving rather than modern acid etching.

Place the box on a marble bathroom vanity, a bedroom nightstand, or atop a stack of art books on a sideboard to add textual interest and subtle historical detail. Its transparent nature allows light to pass through, making it ideal for positioning near secondary light sources or window sills.

Wipe the crystal exterior using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth slightly dampened with warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. The silver gilt metal collar should be gently buffed with a dry polishing cloth, avoiding liquid polishes that can strip the delicate gilded layer or seep into the joinery.
