19th Century Pink Lustreware Jug - Boxing

£350    $472    €409
This antique pink lustreware jug is in fantastic condition, given that it will date to the early 1810''s, during the reign of George III. There are no chips, cracks or old repairs.

The motif dates from 1810 or 1811, as it features Tom Molineux (Molineaux?) and Tom Cribb. Cribb and Molineaux fought two legendary bare-knuckle boxing matches in England in 1810 and 1811. These historic fights between the English champion Cribb and the African-American challenger (and former slave) Molineaux drew massive crowds and remain famous milestones in early pugilistic history.

The first fight was on December 3, 1810 and took place at Shenington Hollow, Oxfordshire, in front of c10,000 spectators. It lasted 33 rounds (around 55 minutes) and was won by Tom Cribb under controversial circumstances. Molineaux dominated early rounds, but an intense dispute and accusations in the 28th round allowed Cribb time to recover before going on to win.

The rematch was on September 28, 1811 at Thistleton...
