Lee Hawkins Antiques & Interiors has dated this Victorian Marine Oil Painting to the 19th Century.
A steam-assisted sailing vessel battles through turbulent water while figures in the foreground haul a small boat across the rocky shoreline. Beyond, St Mary’s Island is shown before the construction of its famous lighthouse in 1897, giving the painting notable topographical and historical interest.
Hemy was closely associated with Newcastle, Cullercoats and the maritime communities of North East England. His paintings are admired for their atmospheric skies, active seas and sensitive depiction of working coastal life. This large-format example is signed “B. B. Hemy” at the lower right and retains expressive impasto, rich seafoam detail and an impressive sense of movement.
Presented within a substantial period-style Victorian gilt composition frame, the work has commanding decorative presence and would suit a traditional study, country house interior or carefully curated contemporary setting.
The canvas has two historic punctures within the sky, including one visible L-shaped tear, and would benefit from professional conservation. The frame displays expected age-related wear and historic patination.
