Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian oil lamp standard is a tall, floor-standing lighting fixture created during the late nineteenth century to hold a central oil reservoir and burner. Many of these pieces were subsequently converted to electrical power during the twentieth century while retaining their original brass frameworks.

These lamps were primarily crafted from solid brass, iron, or bronze, often featuring cast footed bases and telescoping central shafts for height adjustment. Decorative shades were made from etched glass, porcelain, or woven fabrics trimmed with fringe and tassels.

Authentic period examples display cast metal bases with substantial weight, hand-assembled threaded joinery, and natural oxidisation within recessed details. Original oil components or evidence of historical electrical conversion along the central column also indicate age.

Positioning a brass standard lamp beside an armchair or near a reading desk creates a layered lighting scheme. Pairing ornate metalwork with neutral walls or minimalist seating creates visual contrast in traditional and eclectic rooms.

Dust the brass surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina. Fabric shades with fringe should be gently cleaned using a soft brush attachment on a low-vacuum setting.
