High Quality Antique French Leather & Metal Bound Trunk C. 1900

19th century
Description

High Quality Antique French Leather & Metal Bound Trunk c. 1900

This very attractive trunk has beautifully shaped metal mounts that over time have patinated to a bronze type finish. The main body of the trunk is covered in a sienna coloured canvas and overlaid with tan leather detailing and brass studs. It has large leather lifting handles and strong securing clasps. On one end, the trunk still has remnants of labels from its travels around the world. Trunk makers often made their clients curved topped trunks so that no other passengers' trunks could be loaded on top of theirs! This trunk would make a lovely addition to any room and offers a large amount of storage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French metal-bound leather trunk is a durable piece of luggage manufactured around the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, designed for long-distance transport via steamship or railway.

These trunks were typically constructed from a wooden frame wrapped in thick leather, reinforced with brass or steel edging, metal rivets, and cast iron latches.

Authentic pieces exhibit age-appropriate surface patination, hand-riveted structural hardware, period-correct brass lock mechanisms, and construction details consistent with late Victorian or Belle Epoque manufacturing.

An antique trunk can serve as a central coffee table in a living space, functional storage at the foot of a bed, or a decorative accent in a hallway.

Leather surfaces require periodic dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and light applications of neutral leather conditioner to prevent drying, while metal hardware should be kept dry to prevent oxidisation.
