Exceptional 19th-Century Grand Tour Patinated Bronze & Marble Classical Temple with Bust

Brief Description:

Exceptional 19th-Century Grand Tour Patinated Bronze & Marble Classical Temple with Bust

This is a truly exceptional 19th-century Grand Tour architectural bronze and marble sculpture of outstanding quality, inspired by the great monuments of classical antiquity.

Beautifully modelled in the form of a domed classical temple, the piece is supported by four finely fluted Corinthian columns with gilt-bronze collars and capitals, enclosing an elegant patinated bronze bust of a classical female figure raised upon a pedestal. The restrained use of gilded highlights provides a striking contrast against the rich, deep bronze patina, enhancing its sophisticated Neoclassical appearance.

The architectural canopy is surmounted by an impressive ribbed domed roof with an ornamental finial, while the stepped black marble plinth provides both stability and an imposing presentation. The craftsmanship throughout is of the highest order, with crisp casting, finely chased detail and beautifully proportioned classical elements.

Produced during the height of the Grand Tour movement, this remarkable decorative object reflects the enduring fascination with ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture that captivated wealthy European travellers during the 19th century. Pieces of this calibre were acquired as prestigious souvenirs and displayed in the finest libraries, drawing rooms and country houses.

Presented in excellent original condition, commensurate with its age, the sculpture possesses a wonderfully rich, untouched patina that has developed beautifully over time.

An elegant and highly decorative Grand Tour masterpiece, it would make a superb focal point in a refined interior, whether displayed on a library table, console, desk or mantelpiece.

Attributes:

Gilt bronze and black marble

Circa: 1830-1840

Condition:

Presented in excellent original condition with only light age-related wear consistent with its period. The bronze retains a beautiful, naturally aged patina, while the marble remains in very good order.

A magnificent example of 19th-century Grand Tour craftsmanship that is certain to grace any distinguished collection of fine antiques or classical works of art.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy European travellers undertook the Grand Tour to study classical antiquity, purchasing finely crafted scale models of ancient monuments and classical figures as educational souvenirs for their private libraries and cabinets of curiosities.

These models were typically constructed using dark marbles or stone bases, paired with patinated cast bronze for structural details, columns, and central figures, often accented with gilt-bronze fittings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature high-quality hand-chased bronze detailing, natural age-related patina, precise classical proportions, and heavyweight stone or marble bases exhibiting historical wear and subtle tool marks.

Position the piece on a mantelpiece, floating shelf, or within a dark wood bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and vintage glass to highlight its classical silhouette and architectural presence.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoid liquid polish or harsh chemical cleansers, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to protect the original patination and marble.
