A Pair of Scottish Regency Mahogany Grecian Side Chairs, C.1820

19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

A really nice quality pair of chairs with unusual mid-rail and well carved lappeted legs, raised on brass mounts and steel castors.

Similar carved lappeted legs were use by Gillows during this period, however the mid-rail looks Scottish. The top rail is generous and well carved, and the timber on one chair is particularly striking.

The overall chair design is elegant and well-considered giving the chairs and graceful outline and balance, in the trade this is described as 'standing well'.

Both chairs are in good condition and structurally solid. There is a mark to the top cover on one chair, the filling is traditional horse hair and well-stuffed.

Seat height 44cm

Transport throughout the UK can be easily organised at cost price.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency chairs, dating from approximately 1811 to 1830, draw inspiration from classical Greek and Roman forms, featuring curved top rails, sabre or turned legs, and balanced classical proportions.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency era predominantly used high-grade timbers such as Cuban mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood, often featuring hand-carved splats and brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut joinery, original patination on the mahogany, hand-turned front legs, and period-correct construction methods beneath the seat frame.

A pair of side chairs can serve as accent seating in an entryway, flank a console table, or be placed at either end of a contemporary dining table to create visual contrast.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cotton cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually along the grain, keeping wood away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
