Antique Victorian Chippendale Revival Mahogany Torchère C.1880

19th century
Description

A late 19th century mahogany torchère, the dished top featuring a carved border, set over a leaf-carved neck and a bold spiral-twist shaft, above gadrooned collar and fluted stem, all raised on foliate-carved cabriole legs centred by a turned acorn drop finial and terminating in crisp ball-and-claw feet.

Typical of high-grade Victorian Chippendale Revival cabinetmaking, the dense mahogany permits exceptionally crisp, deep relief carving across the multi-stage column with clean, sharp detail throughout.

Very good antique condition, with a warm patina and light surface wear consistent with age, as well as a slight natural tilt to the stem. Structurally sound, sturdy and ready for placement.

English, circa 1880.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale Revival torchere is a tall, slender accent stand produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed in the manner of 18th-century cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale to hold candles, lamps, or decorative urns.

Victorian torcheres are commonly constructed from dense woods such as solid mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-turned shafts, barley-twist or spiral carving, and tripod legs joined to a central pedestal column.

Authentic pieces demonstrate period joinery beneath the top dish, crisp hand-carved details such as acanthus leaves or ball-and-claw feet, and natural surface patination along high-contact areas.

A torchere provides vertical elevation in compact spaces, making it suitable for displaying trailing house plants, ceramic vases, or sculpted busts within an unused alcove or beside seating.

Keep the wood preserved by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish along the grain annually, while avoiding proximity to direct sunlight and radiators.
