Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French hall lanterns evolved during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries primarily as practical glazed enclosures to protect candle flames from draughts in grand entryways and corridors. Over time, their construction incorporated decorative metalwork influenced by Louis XV Rococo and Louis XVI Neoclassical styles.

Traditional French lanterns were predominantly fabricated from cast brass, bronze, or copper, which was often gilded or lacquered to prevent tarnish. Curved or flat clear glass panels were fitted into the frame to shield the interior light fittings.

Authentic period gilded brass typically displays gentle wear at raised contact points, revealing darker underlying metal or warm patination beneath. Genuine mercury or fire-gilding techniques result in a deep, matte gold appearance rather than the bright, uniform sheen found on modern reproductions.

A classic brass lantern serves as a focal point when suspended in an entrance foyer, above a kitchen island, or over a dining table. Combining warm metallic accents with contemporary minimalist architecture creates balanced visual contrast.

Cleaning should be performed using a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush to remove dust from detailed castings. Abrasive polishes, chemical solvents, and water should be avoided, as they can strip or damage original gilded surfaces and patination.
