Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A ferrat is a traditional French agricultural vessel historically used to measure and transport dry grain, flour, or produce. Constructed from durable hammered copper with sturdy side handles, these containers were standard equipment in rural French farms and markets throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Traditional copper grain measures were forged from heavy-gauge sheet copper, shaped into cylindrical or tapered forms, and held together using hand-hammered rivets along the seams. Metal banding was often applied around the exterior circumference to reinforce the body against heavy loads during daily agricultural use.

Authentic period copper containers feature hand-riveted joints, subtle irregularities from manual hammering, and evidence of historical repair or solder. Genuine antique pieces often display aged patination in crevices and copper sheet thickness that exceeds modern mass-produced reproductions.

Copper grain measures function effectively as hearthside log holders, umbrella stands, or substantial floor planters for indoor foliage. Their warm metal tones add textural interest when positioned beside fireplaces, on kitchen islands, or within rustic entryway arrangements.

To maintain a reflective finish, apply a specialized copper cleaner with a soft microfibre cloth, rubbing gently along the grain. For pieces where preserved patination is preferred, dust regularly with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip historical surface oxidation.
