Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, focusing on realistic representations of animals in motion or characteristic poses. Spelter, a zinc-based alloy, became widely used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an accessible alternative to cast bronze for producing decorative figurines.

Spelter items were cast using a zinc alloy, often coated with chemical patinas, lacquer, or cold-painted finishes to simulate the tone of traditional bronze. Figures were frequently mounted onto solid plinths made from Belgian black marble, slate, or veined green marble to provide structural weight and stability.

Spelter is significantly lighter than bronze and exhibits a white or greyish colour where the surface metal is exposed. Bronze pieces are denser, non-magnetic, and generally feature smoother casting seams, whereas spelter castings may show softer detail resolution or join marks under inspection.

These decorative figures are commonly displayed as focal points on fireplace mantelpieces, mahogany sideboards, or inside formal bookcases. Their sculptural silhouettes complement traditional woodwork, leather-bound books, and classic country house styling.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft dry brush or lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid applying chemical solvents, metal polishes, or water, as these treatments can permanently strip or discolour the original painted or chemical patina finish.
