Antique Qashoqdan (Spoon-bag), Lori-bakhtiari Tribes, the Chahar Mahal, Western Persia.

19th century
Description

The 'qashoqdan' in Persian is 'spoon-bag' and the purpose of this bag was to contain wooden spoons for everyday use in tribal life.

The bag was woven in fine soumak technique by Bakhtiari-Lors in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It is interesting to note the depiction of opposing birds in the top and lower ivory cotton panels and also opposing birds-heads in the central panel, symbolising the guardians of the gates of Paradise.

Apart from a tiny repair as seen in the close-up image, the bag has been washed and is in excellent condition.

Size: 46 x 33cm (1' 6" x 1' 1").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A qashoqdan is a specialized Persian tribal storage bag traditionally hand-woven by nomadic tribes to transport wooden spoons and cooking utensils during seasonal migrations.

These textiles were hand-woven using locally sourced, hand-spun sheeps wool for both warp and weave, saturated with organic vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic tribal pieces exhibit natural colour variations called abrash, minor dimensional irregularities from hand looms, and traditional tribal motifs unique to specific weaving clans.

Small woven tribal pouches serve as framed wall art inside shadow boxes, suspended accents on narrow walls, or decorative objects displayed on bookshelves.

Store textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently using suction-only attachments, and treat with professional textile conservators when deep cleaning is required.
