A Very Attractive Pair of 19th Century French Blue Ceramic Jardinièr's

19th century
Description

A Pair of Exceptional Late 19th Century French Cobalt Blue Ceramic Jardinières.

A striking and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century French cobalt blue glazed ceramic jardinières, lavishly mounted with finely cast gilt bronze ormolu in the opulent Louis XVI Revival taste. Rich in classical ornament, each vessel is adorned with beautifully modelled floral swags, ribbon-tied garlands, scrolling acanthus borders and elegant female mask handles, demonstrating the exceptional quality of French decorative arts during the Belle Époque.

The deep cobalt blue glaze provides a dramatic contrast to the warm, time-softened ormolu mounts, creating a luxurious appearance that would have graced the grand salons and conservatories of the finest French interiors. The scalloped rims, gadrooned detailing and finely chased pedestal bases resting on four ornate feet further enhance their architectural elegance.

Perfect as centrepieces, urns, or statement planters, these jardinières possess impressive scale while remaining versatile enough for display on consoles, pedestals or dining tables. Whether planted or appreciated purely as sculptural decorative objects, they bring timeless sophistication and grandeur to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Presented in good antique condition with a wonderful aged patina to the ormolu and vibrant original glaze. Very small wear hardly even noticeable and commensurate with age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In 19th-century France, jardinieres were prominent decorative vessels designed to display indoor foliage and flowers within wealthy households. Crafted to reflect styles such as Rococo Revival and Empire, these items represented technical skill in ceramic production and metalwork.

These vessels were predominantly constructed from glazed earthenware or hard-paste porcelain, paired with cast brass or bronze mounts, known as ormolu. The metalwork was often gilded to contrast with deep ceramic glazes, such as cobalt blue or cobalt black.

Authentic pieces feature heavy, hand-chased metal castings with natural wear or oxidisation in crevices, secured with period-appropriate threaded rods or screws rather than modern fasteners. Glazes typically display slight variations in tone and texture consistent with 19th-century kiln firing methods.

A pair of jardinieres can be placed symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish structure. They function effectively as standalone sculptural statements or can be used to hold curated botanical arrangements.

Dust the ceramic surfaces and metalwork using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or water on gilt bronze, as moisture can compromise the gilding and metal finish.
