19th century
For Sale by Spinka & Co
Description

P0277 A Monumental Late-Victorian Solid Oak Overmantel or Floor Mirror, circa 1880.

This spectacular 19th-century mirror is a masterclass in grand Victorian cabinetry, combining imposing proportions with exceptional hand-carving. The upper section features a cavetto cornice enriched with carved foliage, crowned by decorative bell-shaped finials. Below, a striking acanthus leaf frieze surmounts an elegant egg-and-dart inner border. The frame is flanked by magnificent, substantial reeded columns, detailed with ornate leaf capitals at the crest, scrolling motifs, and beautiful floral carvings at the base.

The mirror retains its original 19th-century glass, displaying a light, authentic foxing that beautifully testifies to its age and heritage. Preserved in remarkable original condition throughout, the solid oak frame boasts its original finish—which has been expertly cleaned and hand-waxed alongside its original panelled timber backboards.

Versatile in design, this statement piece can be positioned as a majestic overmantel mirror or used as a full-length floor-standing mirror. A truly monumental statement piece, this late-Victorian solid oak mirror brings architectural grandeur to any room.

This monumental antique mirror came to us from a private individual, Alderley Edge in Cheshire. It has been very well looked after over the years. Solid and sturdy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian carved oak mirrors from the 19th century typically feature architectural elements such as fluted side columns, ornate friezes, and hand-carved foliate motifs influenced by Gothic Revival and Renaissance aesthetics.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid English oak, hand-dovetailed frames, and mortise and tenon joinery, paired with silvered mercury or early nitrate glass plates backed by solid timber boards.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tool marks on the rear wood backings, natural oxidisation within the carved timber recesses, and minor foxing or age-related marks on the glass plate.

Positioned as an overmantel focal point or styled leaning against a neutral wall, a large carved oak mirror introduces architectural texture and reflects natural light across modern living spaces.

Dust the carved woodwork regularly with a soft brush and apply natural beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, taking care to keep liquid glass cleaners away from the timber edge.
