Early Anatolian Silk Prayer Rug of Ghiordes Design - 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

An early example of an exceptional 19th-century prayer rug. A master-class of classical Ghiordes design, hand-knotted silk with a silk warp and cotton wefts. Woven upside down, as you face the mihrab the pile heads away from you. featuring a paper-thin profile and a wheat-ivory mihrab defined by a sharply stepped acute arch, from which a highly detailed chandelier lamp is delicately suspended. Slender columns on floral bases frame the central niche beneath traditional horizontal cross-panels, all enclosed by a rich, multi-layered border system of deep indigo, madder red, and sage green natural dyes. All together featuring a stunning array of 9 natural colours. This masterpiece combines architectural scale with fine precision, making it a collectible grade acquisition. Some defects, irregular shape, reduced top border. Small repairs and wear as seen from the bottom, would make a stunning wall hanging.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ghiordes prayer rugs originate from western Anatolia and are characterised by a distinct architectural niche motif, known as a mihrab, often featuring stepped arches, hanging central lamps, and elaborate multi-banded floral borders.

Anatolian prayer rugs were traditionally woven using natural silk or wool pile on silk or cotton foundations, utilising double knotting techniques to achieve detailed geometric and botanical patterns.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-spun yarns, natural dye variations, precise knot density, and classic regional characteristics such as stepped prayer arches and prominent spandrel patterns.

These detailed textiles serve as focal wall hangings, framed art pieces, or decorative accents draped over consoles and tables to add depth and historical character to modern spaces.

Display the rug away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, avoid high-traffic foot areas, vacuum without a rotary brush, and consult a professional conservator for specialised cleaning.
