Description

A charming late 18th century creamware pottery hot water jug and cover by Wedgwood, of plain baluster form with nice details including a stepped foot and bifurcated ribbed handle with decorative moulded leaf terminals. The incurved cover with globular knop and incised ring around the edge. The jug impressed WEDGWOOD, c.1780.

It measures 16.5cm (6 1/2") high and 12.8cm (5") spout to handle and 9cm (3") across the belly. 

In very good condition with no damage, repair or restoration to the jug. The cover has three small shallow chips to the underside edge. No repair or restoration. Minimal handling wear.

Creamware is a refined cream-coloured earthenware developed in Staffordshire during the mid-18th century. Popularised by Josiah Wedgwood as Queens Ware, it became the standard refined tableware across Britain and Europe during the Georgian era.

18th-century creamware was crafted from white clays mixed with calcined flint and coated with a clear lead glaze. The lightness of the ceramic body allowed for crisp moulding, turned bases, and delicate hand-applied handles or finials.

Authentic 18th-century Wedgwood creamware often features impressed marks such as WEDGWOOD in lowercase or small block letters, along with a lightweight body and a light greenish cast where lead glaze pools in crevices.
