George III Satinwood Octagonal Work Table Sewing Table Lion Mask Handles C.1800

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

This is an elegant George III satinwood work table, dating from around 1800.

Of unusual octagonal form, the table is beautifully veneered throughout in richly figured satinwood and stands on slender square tapering legs terminating in the original brass socket castors. The hinged top opens to reveal a useful storage compartment, while the front is fitted with two drawers, balanced by matching dummy drawers and decorative panels to the remaining sides, each retaining its original lion mask ring handles.

The hinged top opens to reveal its original satin-lined fitted interior, retaining the arrangement intended for sewing and needlework accessories. The survival of the original interior is an increasingly uncommon feature and adds considerably to both the authenticity and appeal of the piece.

The refined proportions, delicate tapered legs and restrained neoclassical design are characteristic of the finest English cabinet making of the late Georgian period. Originally intended as a work or sewing table, it also makes an attractive lamp table or occasional table, offering useful storage within a compact footprint.

A particularly decorative and highly versatile Georgian piece with excellent colour and pleasing figured veneers throughout.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 72 cm

Width: 45 cm

Depth: 34 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition. There are the expected marks, knocks and surface scratches consistent with over two centuries of use. The top has developed a slight historic bow and displays some surface scratching commensurate with age. There are small losses to sections of the moulded edge beading, together with minor opening to some joints around the sides and corresponding losses to the original black stringing or infill in places.

The legs remain sturdy, showing only light age-related wear, and retain their original brass socket castors, all of which roll freely. The original lion mask ring handles are present throughout, and the table displays a warm colour and attractive patina.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III work table is a late 18th-century piece of furniture designed primarily for needlework and small domestic crafts, featuring drawers or fabric pouches and supported by elegant legs.

Cabinetmakers during the Georgian period frequently used fine timbers such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, often featuring brass castors, hand-cut dovetails, and cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, natural timber oxidisation, hand-planed drawer linings, original brass hardware, and evidence of historical hand-tooling.

These tables function as side tables or occasional tables beside an armchair, in a reading nook, or within an entryway to add historical interest to a contemporary room.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the veneer, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly once or twice a year.
