Large William IV Plum Pudding Mahogany Corner Cupboard C.1835 with Keys

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A large and impressive William IV plum pudding mahogany corner cupboard dating from the early nineteenth century, circa 1835.

Constructed in richly figured plum pudding mahogany, the cupboard is formed in two sections beneath a shaped pediment with elegant scroll cresting. The upper section is enclosed by a pair of moulded panel doors with distinctive floral corner blocks, opening to reveal a shelved interior. The lower section mirrors the design with a further pair of panelled doors enclosing additional shelving, providing an exceptional amount of practical storage.

The beautifully figured veneers, restrained architectural form and generous proportions are characteristic of the William IV period. Standing an impressive 280 cm high, this is a substantial piece that would make a striking addition to a hallway, dining room, library or country house interior.

The cupboard retains both working locks together with two keys—one for the upper section and one for the lower.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 280 cm

Width: 130 cm

Depth: 75 cm

CONDITION

There are the expected marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. The cupboard retains an attractive colour and well-figured plum pudding mahogany veneers throughout. There are some losses to the veneers around the plinth, consistent with age and use, but no significant structural issues. Both sets of doors close well and retain their working locks with one key for the upper section and one for the lower. Overall, this is a substantial and well-preserved example that presents very well.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Furniture from the William IV period (18301837) bridges the Regency and Victorian eras, characterised by substantial proportions, classical architectural influences, and the prominent use of rich wood veneers such as mahogany and rosewood.

Plum pudding mahogany refers to a specific timber figure featuring small, rounded dark spots dispersed throughout the grain pattern, resembling plums in a traditional pudding.

Authentic period cupboards feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass or iron locks, hand-planed backboards, and natural surface patination accumulated over time.

A tall corner cupboard optimizes underutilised room corners, providing vertical storage and warm wood tones that contrast against contemporary paint palettes in dining rooms, halls, or living spaces.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, apply high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to protect the natural finish and grain.
