Pair of Gouache Flower Still Life, Attrib. J.r. Feyerabend 'Lelong', C.1800

Description

A fine pair of early 19th-century gouache still lifes, each depicting an abundant bouquet of flowers — including roses, carnations, daisies, and lilac — tied with a trailing white ribbon, set against a dark, atmospheric ground in the neoclassical decorative manner. One of the pair includes a butterfly poised above the arrangement.

These gouaches are attributed to Johann Rudolf Feyerabend (Basel, 1779–1814), who worked in Normandy under the pseudonym "Lelong" — a nickname reportedly given to him by locals who found his Swiss-German surname difficult to pronounce. Feyerabend/Lelong is well known for small, decorative gouache still lifes of flowers, fruit, and tabletop objects, and his work under this name is now widely catalogued in the trade and at auction (Bonhams, Tajan, Cabinet Éric Turquin, among others).

The pair retains what appears to be its original giltwood frames, with a fine beaded and egg-and-dart inner slip consistent with the period. The paintings carry a layered provenance: Paris dealer's label dating them circa 1800–1810; and an earlier owner's label associated with the Château de Cinq-Mars (Touraine).
