An Irish antique Edwardian sterling silver "Mether" which has a plain body, a wavy top edge and resting on four stylish support handles. This unusual and decorative object was originally designed as a drinking vessel and was popular in Ireland for serving mead. Today it could equally be used as a vase and would look eye catching when displayed. It remains in excellent condition.

Originating in ancient Ireland, the mether was a traditional Gaelic communal drinking cup historically carved from a single block of wood. During the Celtic Revival movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, silversmiths recreated these historic forms in hallmarked sterling silver.
