Description

A Worcester porcelain lobed square dessert dish, rarely painted with the Chantilly Sprig pattern which is usually only found on tea wares, and copied directly from French porcelains of the period. A pseudo-French style mark to the underside, c.1780. Caughley did produce dessert wares in this same pattern that are well documented as being always marked with the Salopian "S", occasionally the "C" mark, or are unmarked.

Provenance: The Baines Collection.

Reference: Worcester Porcelain, Branyan, French & Sandon; Caughley & Worcester Porcelains, Godden; English Blue & White Porcelain, Godden.

It measures 24cm (9 1/2") wide (edge to edge) and 4 (1 1/2") high.

In excellent condition with just a couple of very minor chips to the foot rim. No repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. Slight running of the design around the edges.

First Period Worcester porcelain, also known as the Dr Wall period, spans from the factorys establishment in 1751 until 1783. It is characterised by soft-paste porcelain containing soapstone, featuring hand-painted or transfer-printed underglaze blue decoration inspired by East Asian and French ceramic designs.

These pieces were crafted from a soft-paste porcelain body fortified with steatite (soapstone) from Cornwall, which made the ceramic resistant to thermal shock. The decoration was rendered using cobalt oxide underglaze, finished with a lead glaze.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a greenish or bluish hue when held up to a strong light source due to the soapstone content. Collectors also look for specific maker marks such as the open crescent, painted workman marks, characteristic shrinkages, and glaze pooling near the footrim.

An antique porcelain dish can be displayed on a lucite or wooden stand within a china cabinet, styled flat on a sideboard, or group-mounted on a dining room wall to create a structured ceramic gallery display.
