Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kashmiri papier-mache crafting originated in the 15th century in the Kashmir Valley, heavily influenced by Persian artisans. By the 19th century, craftsmen adapted this decorative technique to small furniture items like tables and trays to supply the British export market.

These pieces typically feature a wooden core overlaid with layers of pulped paper and plaster. The surface is hand-painted using mineral or botanical pigments, detailed with gold leaf or metallic paint, and sealed with a protective varnish or lacquer.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-applied gold leaf decoration, dense floral or paisley motifs (chinar leaves), and subtle surface texture under the lacquer. Modern reproductions often use printed patterns or synthetic gloss varnishes that lack the depth of historic lacquerwork.

A patterned Kashmiri side table serves as a distinctive accent piece alongside neutral upholstered sofas or armchairs. Position it where light highlights the metallic paintwork, paired with modern minimal lighting to balance the detailed pattern.

Keep papier-mache furniture away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moist environments to prevent warping or cracking of the lacquer. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using solvent-based liquids or spray polishes.
