Antique French Vernis Martin Bombé Cabinet with Ormolu Mounts & Marble Top C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional antique French Vernis Martin bombé cabinet dating from circa 1900, combining richly figured timber, luminous painted decoration and finely cast gilt-bronze mounts in the opulent Louis XV taste.

The cabinet is distinguished by its elegant serpentine marble top, dramatically curved bombé form and extensive decorative panels depicting romantic figures within atmospheric woodland landscapes. Executed in the traditional Vernis Martin manner, the painted scenes display warm amber, russet and golden tones that contrast beautifully with the deep colour and diagonal figuring of the surrounding veneers.

Finely modelled gilt-bronze mounts enrich the cabinet throughout. Classical female mask mounts descend from the upper corners into scrolling acanthus decoration, while additional foliate mounts frame the painted panels and embellish the shaped apron and front legs. The principal door opens to reveal a useful interior storage compartment, with the reverse retaining a rich red velvet lining.

Furniture of this type was created as a decorative statement rather than merely for storage. Its combination of bombé cabinetmaking, marble, pictorial decoration and sculptural metalwork gives it enduring appeal among collectors of French decorative furniture and interior designers seeking a singular focal point.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Vernis Martin refers to a specialised French lacquering technique developed in the 18th century by the Martin brothers, widely adapted onto curved or bombe furniture featuring hand-painted pastoral scenes.

These cabinets feature fine wood veneers such as kingwood or rosewood, chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, hand-applied lacquer paintwork, and a shaped marble top.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-chased brass or bronze mounts, fine craquelure within the lacquered painted panels, quality veneer work beneath the metal borders, and dovetail joinery.

Position the piece as a standalone focal point in a hallway, drawing room, or reception space, pairing it with neutral wall tones to accentuate the lacquerwork and gilded details.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid exposure to direct sunlight and heating sources to prevent varnish cracking, and keep metal mounts clean without using harsh chemical polishes.
