1940 - 1960
For Sale by Darnley Fine Art
Description

Oil on board

Image Size: 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches (21.6 x 26.7 cm)

Gilt frame

This humorous painting captures the artists perspective of ‘A long Day’ with a man asleep on the train as he commutes in and out of the city, with the obscured face the artist suggests an anonymity to the man who is one of many making the daily journey.

On the back of the frame is an exhibition label from the late The Phoenix Gallery in Lavenham, which opened in Suffolk in 1952 by Ronald McCausland-White (1908-1980) which held many important exhibitions. Many of the artists the gallery promoted were eminent Royal Academicians of their day.

Twentieth-century British School figurative art often emphasizes muted colour palettes, textured impasto surface quality, and observational scenes of everyday life, narrative interiors, or seated figures.

Artists during this period typically utilized oil paints on woven cotton or linen canvas, stretched over timber frames, occasionally employing heavy impasto or scumbling techniques.

Authenticity is evaluated through provenance records, signature analysis, stylistic comparison to contemporary art movements like the Euston Road School, and period-correct canvas and stretcher construction.

Figurative oil paintings work well hung as focal points above sideboards, mantelpieces, or integrated into gallery walls alongside neutral architectural features to highlight rich canvas textures.

Original oil paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, and dusted gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush.
