Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian glass claret jug is a decorative pouring vessel crafted during the nineteenth century specifically for serving claret or red wine. These pieces were designed for display on dining tables and sideboards, featuring distinct body shapes, applied glass handles, and fitted decorative stoppers.

Victorian glassmakers produced coloured glass by adding metallic oxides to the molten glass batch, such as copper or chromium compounds for green tones. Handles were applied by hand while the glass was hot, and surface decoration was achieved using vitreous enamels, gold leaf, or wheel-engraving before final annealing.

Authentic Victorian pieces often display hand-blown characteristics, such as a ground or polished pontil mark on the base. They frequently feature hand-cut stoppers ground specifically to fit the neck, hand-applied enamel or gilded detailing showing age-appropriate wear, and slight variations in glass thickness.

Place the jug on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelf alongside complementary barware to create a curated display. Positioning the vessel near a natural light source allows light to pass through the coloured glass and highlight the faceted stopper.

Hand-painted antique glass should be hand-washed using tepid water and a mild detergent, taking care around gilded or enamelled areas. Never place painted glass in a dishwasher or submerge it in hot water, as rapid temperature changes and harsh detergents can cause micro-cracking or strip surface decoration.
