Description

Original Double Portrait Watercolour Painting 19th-Century Antique Caricature

Brief Description:

This is a beautiful, original 19th-century double-portrait watercolour and charcoal painting depicting two distinguished gentlemen, one of whom is identified as a Captain, whilst the other is believed to be a Doctor.

Beautifully observed and full of character, the work captures the contrasting stature and personalities of the two figures with remarkable charm and delicate attention to detail.

The painting is inscribed lower left, lower centre, and lower right, adding further interest and authenticity to this delightful Victorian study.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the Victorian era, caricature portraits captured prominent social figures or generalised character types in a light-hearted or satirical manner, rendered in watercolour on paper.

These works were typically executed using ground pigments bound with gum arabic on rag paper, often framed behind glass with board mounts.

Look for signs of age such as natural foxing, gentle yellowing of paper, hand-drawn graphite lines beneath the paint washes, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Displaying framed historical caricatures within a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints or hanging them in a study creates a sophisticated, curated contrast.

Keep paper works out of direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity to prevent mould, and use UV-protective glass with conservation-grade acid-free mounting materials.
