Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kari-kalamdani, originated in the 15th century under the patronage of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. By the 19th century, workshops in Srinagar produced decorative wares primarily for European markets and British officers, blending traditional Persian floral designs with Victorian forms.

Artisans layered paper pulp and waste paper over wooden or clay moulds using starched paste. Once dry and removed from the mould, the surface was burnished smooth with agate stones, coated with plaster, hand-painted using mineral pigments, and sealed with protective natural varnish or lacquer.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature dense, intricate hand-painted floral arabesques (hazara or miniature painting styles) and fine real gold leaf application. Age is indicated by gentle craquelure in the lacquer finish, slight asymmetry from hand-moulding, and soft wear along the base rims.

Place these decorative vessels on a neutral sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramics or dark wood accents. Their detailed, colourful painted surface provides visual contrast and historical texture in maximalist, eclectic, or traditional interiors.

Keep papier-mache out of direct sunlight and moisture, as water dissolves the paper structure and varnish layer. Clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth or soft ostrich feather duster, avoiding chemical polish, liquid cleaners, or wet cloths.
