A Rare W(***) Porcelain Pedestal Vase and Cover, Mansfield Decorated C.1799-1802

18th century
Description

A fine and rare W(***) Porcelain pedestal Vase and cover, Mansfield decorated, c1799-1802. Very finely painted in the manner of William Billingsley with country houses, within gilt palm frond reserves, the white ground richly gilt in the Neoclassical taste, square base, Christie's and "Woodhall-Greene" Collection labels, the latter numbered 492

The piece bears the impressed mark of the enigmatic W(***) factory.

It is thought (but not known for certain) that that factory was operated by the Whitehead family-Whitehead senior having three sons-hence the three stars.

Condition: Cover with a small amount of crazing, the urn with small area of restoration to rim and to small chips where base and urn meet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian Neoclassical porcelain urns typically feature classical urn shapes mounted on square plinths, incorporating domed covers with finials, heavy gilding, and hand-painted topographical or landscape reserves inspired by classical antiquity.

Pieces from this period were crafted using soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain, fired at high temperatures, and embellished with hand-applied enamel paints and mercury gilding that was burnished to achieve a high sheen.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate wear to the gilding on high points, hand-painted details with visible brushwork, age-appropriate porcelain translucency, and specific factory maker marks or painter marks beneath the base.

A decorative porcelain urn can be placed as a focal accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, paired alongside minimalist contemporary art or structured greenery to contrast historical craftsmanship with clean modern lines.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals, harsh detergents, or immersion in water which can degrade delicate mercury gilding and overglaze enamel painting.
